UPDATE: One person charged in connection with shooting outside J.H. Rose High School

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Greenville police say a 19-year-old has been charged in connection with a late morning shooting at the J.H. Rose High School recreational field.

Shamel Rashad Arrington faces charges of attempted first degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Around 10:40 in the morning, police responded to a Shotspotter alert in the immediate area of J.H. Rose High School.

Officers found an 18-year-old male on a recreational practice field in the area of Marvin Jarman Drive. The man sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to ECU Health Medical Center. The shooting appears to have been a targeted incident.

Investigators said the victim was not a student and the shooting was not related to any school activities.

J.H. Rose High School was immediately secured and placed on lockdown for approximately 30 minutes as a precaution.

Within minutes of the shooting, detectives had identified a suspect vehicle. Four people were detained for questioning within an hour of the incident.

Arrington was charged as a result of the interviews and evidence recovered by detectives.

He’s in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $600,000 bond.

The investigation is ongoing.

EARLIER WEDNESDAY:

Four people are being questioned by Greenville police after a shooting next to J.H. Rose High School put it on lockdown this morning.

Police said it happened around 10:45 a.m. on the school’s practice field. That field is in the back of the high school along Marvin Jarmin Drive.

The victim is not a student, according to police, and has been taken to ECU Health Medical Center with a non-life-threatening injury.

The lockdown has since been lifted, but police say increased security will remain on campus as a precaution.

Police Chief Ted Sauls said the 18-year-old was actually shot next to Marvin Jarmin Drive.

“It is intolerable to have this type of activity. It’s intolerable to have it happen anywhere, much less adjacent to a school as we see here,” Sauls said. “The injuries that the victim sustained in this investigation do not appear to be life-threatening

Police say there is no ongoing threat at the school and there is no connection between the school and the shooting. Sauls said multiple shots were fired.

“Due to our resources and the resources of the community and of our supporters, there is not anywhere that you’ll move in this city that we don’t know about. There is not anywhere that you’ll go that we will not find you,” said the chief.
