CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - A search for a man who witnesses say jumped off a bridge Friday night was called off.

Atlantic Beach Fire Chief Mike Simpson said a young man was spotted jumping off the high-rise bridge and a boat that had no running lights was down below. Simpson said the boat hung out, made a few turns and disappeared, according to witnesses.

Simpson confirmed someone did jump but that it appears to be an act of mischief and that someone picked him up in a boat and took off.

Rescue crews from Morehead City, Atlantic Beach and the Coast Guard conducted searches in the water beneath the high-rise bridge from Morehead City to Atlantic Beach.

The search, which went on for more than two hours, was called off at 11:30 p.m. and Simpson said there have been no reports of any missing persons or any object in the waterway on Saturday.

Carteret Health Care was notified to look out for anyone who came in with injuries related to such an incident, but Simpson said there have been no reports of that so far.
