ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - WITN’s Teacher of the Week for June 9 is Atressa Mercado from New Bridge Middle School.

Mercado has a lengthy career teaching at various schools in many different states. She has been a New Bridge Bear, teaching math and ELA, since 2015.

Prior to that, Mercado taught at Jacksonville Commons Middle School, Northside High School and at schools in Tennessee and Florida.

Mercado is a UNCW graduate and earned her degree in Middle Grades Education with a concentration in math and language arts. She was also accepted into the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program.

When she’s not in the classroom, she enjoys spending time with her children and husband.

The person who nominated Mrs. Mercado wrote, “I think my teacher Mrs. Mercado should be this week’s TOTW.

She is my math and ELA teacher. Math has always been my worst subject, but this year I feel confident about my skills. She has taught me to not be afraid to speak up and voice my thoughts on problems. She has helped me, and my classmates improve so much.

This year has been crazy, but I’m so lucky that I’ve had an amazing teacher. Every day I look forward to seeing her and being in her class. She has such a great sense of humor and understands kids so well.

Mrs. Mercado makes learning fun, which is a hard thing to achieve. Most of all, she is caring. She cares about every one of her students and all she wants is to see them succeed. I really hope you would pick her to be TOTW.”

Congratulations Mrs. Mercado!

Every week during the school year WITN will recognize a Teacher of the Week on WITN News at Sunrise. The winner receives a plaque and $100 gift card for school supplies.
