FAMILY: Baby in car when mom shot & killed in hotel parking lot
NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) - Craven County District Attorney, Scott Thomas confirms the couples baby was in the car when Eric Lipford allegedly murdered his girlfriend, the child’s mom, Shennelle Patterson.
“This was not a random act of violence, this was an act between two people that knew each other,” said Thomas.
Lipford, who previously resided in Plymouth, will continue to be held at the Craven County Jail without bond for the murder of Patterson.
Patterson was shot in a car outside the BridgePointe Hotel and Marina in New Bern on Saturday.
Lipford was charged with murder and went before a Craven County judge Monday morning.
Lipford’s family says the two had a child together and that baby was inside the car at the time of the shooting. The child, who is between six and eight months old, wasn’t hurt and is now with Lipford’s sister.
Thomas said an autopsy showed Patterson was shot just once.
Court records show the woman was arrested earlier this year and charged with involuntary manslaughter and accessory after the fact.
Lipford’s aunt, Sonya Nobles said Lipford brought Patterson and his son to New Bern to help Patterson deal with the stresses of her own charges. “She was going through a lot of stressful moments, you know in and out, she was dealing with a lot of depression. So he brought her down here because he is from New Bern North Carolina,” said Nobles.
Lipford has his next hearing set for April 26th.
A woman who was found suffering from an apparent gunshot wound outside of the BridgePointe Hotel and Marina in New Bern on Saturday later died at a hospital, officials said.
Captain David Daniels said they got the call at 9:27 a.m. about a gunshot victim in the parking lot of the BridgePointe Hotel and Marina and medical and law enforcement personnel found a woman suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was transported to CarolinaEast Medical Center where she passed away, Daniels said.
The suspect, who was identified as Eric Daniel Lipford, 33, of Plymouth, reportedly knows the victim and the shooting was an isolated incident.
Officers took Lipford from the scene to the New Bern Police Department, where he was taken into custody.
Lipford has been charged with an open count of murder and is being held at the Craven County Jail with no bond. He will have his first appearance in court on Monday.
