KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) - Local Kinston officials dedicated a new bench to highlight Child Abuse Prevention Month. Social workers, first responders, and child welfare advocates dedicated the new park bench in Kinston Wednesday.

The bench was designed in neighboring Wayne County, which shares a Judicial District with Lenoir County. Advocates say the goal is to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect in the area.

The bench is on display at city and county parks, along with educational information and resources.

Colleen Kosinski oversees the Guardian Ad Litem program in Lenoir County. She says there were more than 600 reports of child abuse in the county last year alone, and over 50 of those cases required legal interventions.

“These children suffer in silence, and we need the community to be aware, so every child feels protected and feels that they have someone looking after them.”

Kosinski encourages people who notice signs of abuse or neglect to contact their local authorities.
